Children Entering New Zealand for Adoption

Children being adopted by New Zealand citizens or residents under the Adoption Act 1955 may be eligible for a temporary visitor visa to enter and stay in New Zealand during the adoption process.

Who This Visa Is For

This visa is for children who are:

  • Coming to New Zealand to be adopted by New Zealand citizens or residence class visa holders
  • Being adopted under the New Zealand Adoption Act 1955

How Long Can They Stay?

  • Initial visa: Up to 6 months
  • Extension visas: May be granted for up to 12 months at a time, if more time is needed to finalise the adoption

Children can stay as long as needed to complete the adoption process, provided an interim adoption order remains valid.

What Documents Are Needed?

To apply for this visa, you must provide:

  • Support letter from Oranga Tamariki – Ministry for Children
  • The child’s birth certificate
  • Proof that the adoptive parent(s) are New Zealand citizens or residents

Special Considerations

In some cases, immigration officers can waive the usual visa requirements, such as:

  • Proof of funds
  • Onward travel tickets
  • Medical and health requirements

This is done through special direction, depending on the circumstances of the adoption and advice from Oranga Tamariki.

Ongoing Visas During the Adoption Process

Further temporary visas can be granted while the adoption is being processed if:

  • An interim adoption order is still valid
  • Oranga Tamariki confirms that progress is being made on the adoption
