Dependent Children of NZ Citizens or Residents

If you're a New Zealand citizen or residence class visa holder, your dependent children may be eligible for a visitor visa to join you in New Zealand.

Who Can Apply

This visa is for dependent children of:

  • New Zealand citizens, or
  • Residence class visa holders

To qualify, the following must apply:

  • The parent intends to stay in New Zealand during the same period as the child
  • The parent supports the visa application

How Long Can They Stay?

  • Initial visa: Up to 9 months
  • Extension: Further visas may be granted for a total stay of up to 2 years if the parent remains in New Zealand and continues to support the child

Required Documents

When applying, you must provide:

  • Proof of the parent’s New Zealand citizenship or residence status
  • Documents confirming the parent-child relationship
  • Evidence that the parent and child intend to stay together in New Zealand
  • A supporting declaration from the New Zealand parent

Work Rights for Older Children (17–24 Years Old)

Older dependent children may be granted limited work rights with their visitor visa if they:

  • Are aged 17–24 at the time of application
  • Have completed Year 13 of secondary school (or equivalent overseas)
  • Are waiting for the outcome of a residence application with their parent

They can:

  • Work up to 20 hours per week, and
  • Work full-time during the summer holiday period (1 Dec – 31 Jan)

Acceptable evidence of Year 13 completion includes a school letter, graduation certificate, or final report.

Important Notes

  • Part-time work under this visa will not affect their status as a dependent in future immigration assessments.
  • The summer holiday period applies only to visitor visa holders and is defined as 1 December to 31 January. This differs from student visa conditions.
