Parent & Grandparent Multiple Entry Visitor Visa

This visa allows parents and grandparents of New Zealand citizens or residents to visit their family in New Zealand for extended stays over a 3-year period.

Who Can Apply?

To be eligible, the applicant must:

  • Be the parent or grandparent (or their partner) of a New Zealand citizen or residence visa holder
  • Apply from outside New Zealand
  • Be sponsored by their child or grandchild in New Zealand who is 18 years or older
  • Provide a full medical certificate, even if planning to stay for less than 12 months

Note: Children of the applicant cannot be included in this visa and must apply separately for their own visitor visa.

 Who Can Sponsor?

  • The sponsor must be a NZ citizen or resident and meet all standard sponsorship requirements
  • If the NZ child or grandchild is under 18, the parent of that child or grandchild (such as the child’s NZ-born parent-in-law) can be the sponsor
  • A sponsor can only support one person or one couple (principal applicant and their partner) at a time

What Documents Are Needed?

You must submit:

  • A Sponsorship Form for Temporary Entry (INZ 1025) completed by the NZ sponsor
  • Proof of the sponsor’s citizenship or residence status
  • Documents proving the family relationship between applicant and the NZ sponsor

Visa Duration & Stay Limits

Approved applicants will receive a 3-year multiple-entry visitor visa with:

  • 6-month visits allowed from each date of arrival
  • A maximum total stay of 18 months across the 3 years

Example: You can enter NZ multiple times over 3 years but can only stay a total of 18 months across all trips.

When You May Not Be Approved for Another Visa

You may not be eligible for another multiple-entry parent/grandparent visa if:

  • Your sponsor was not in New Zealand during your previous visits, or
  • You overstayed the 18-month total limit on your previous visa
  • You are reapplying within 3 years of your last visa under this category

Important Notes

  • The sponsor must be in New Zealand during your visit
  • This visa is designed for visiting family, not for residency or work
  • Medical insurance is highly recommended
