General Visitor visa Overview

Whether you're coming to explore the scenery, visit loved ones, attend a short business trip, or join family temporarily, New Zealand’s visitor visa options provide flexible pathways for short-term stays.

Let JD Immigration guide you through everything you need to know — the rules, the process, and the special visitor visa categories available for unique situations.

What Is a Visitor Visa?

A visitor visa allows people to enter New Zealand for a limited period. You can:

  • Travel for tourism
  • Visit family and friends
  • Attend short-term business activities
  • Take part in cultural or sporting events
  • Study for up to 3 months in a 12-month period

You cannot work on a visitor visa unless you're a digital nomad (more on that below), and you must leave the country before the visa expires or apply for an extension.

Step-by-Step: How to Apply for a Visitor Visa

Step 1: Check if You Need a Visa

  • Citizens of visa-waiver countries may not need a full visitor visa but will need to apply for a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before boarding their flight.
  • Others must apply for a visitor visa in advance.

Step 2: Understand the Visa Conditions

  • Know your expiry datelength of stay, and visa conditions.
  • Keep a copy of your visa (or NZeTA) saved on your phone or printed for easy access while travelling.

Step 3: Prepare the Right Documents

Depending on your purpose, you may need:

  • A valid passport
  • Travel itinerary and return flight booking
  • Proof of funds to support your stay
  • Evidence of ties to your home country

Step 4: Be Honest and Accurate

  • Disclose past issues such as visa refusals, criminal history, or health problems — these don't automatically mean a decline, but hiding them often does.
  • If in doubt, speak to a licensed immigration adviser before applying.

Step 5: Apply Early

Apply at least 4–6 weeks before your planned trip. During peak periods, visa processing can take longer.

Can I Work While Visiting New Zealand?

Generally, no — but there is one exception:

Digital Nomads can continue working remotely for overseas employers while visiting New Zealand, as long as:

  • You’re not working for or being paid by a New Zealand company.
  • You’re not offering goods or services to New Zealanders.
  • Work is not the primary purpose of your visit.

Important: Know Before You Travel

  • Customs Rules: New Zealand has strict biosecurity laws. Don’t bring food, seeds, plants, or animal products unless you are certain it’s allowed.
  • Health & Character: Depending on your country of origin and stay duration, you may need to undergo health checks or provide police certificates.
  • Always Know Your Visa Conditions: You are responsible for understanding and complying with the conditions of your visa.

What Is an NZeTA?

The New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) is a travel pre-clearance required for citizens of visa-waiver countries.

Key Facts:

  • Valid for 2 years
  • Mandatory for transit or short visits
  • Can be applied for via the official INZ website or mobile app
  • Processing time: up to 72 hours
  • All cruise ship passengers, regardless of nationality, need one

Avoid fake websites and always apply through the official Immigration NZ portal.
