Work to Residence Visa Pathways – Overview

New Zealand offers clear pathways to residence for essential workers through its Work to Residence visa categories. If you've been working in an eligible role in either the care sector or the transport sector, you may qualify for residence after 24 months of full-time work.


Care Workforce: Work to Residence

This visa is designed for health and support workers who have dedicated at least 2 years to caring for others in New Zealand.
To qualify, applicants must:

  • Work in an eligible care sector occupation (like aged carer, support worker, or personal care assistant),
  • Earn at least $28.25 per hour, and
  • Have completed 24 months of full-time work in NZ since 29 September 2021.

Transport Sector: Work to Residence

This category supports skilled transport workers who help keep NZ moving.
To qualify, applicants must:

  • Work in an eligible transport occupation (like truck driver, bus driver, deckhand, or ship’s master),
  • Be paid at or above the required wage for their role (currently up to $33.56/hr), and
  • Have completed 24 months of full-time work in NZ since 29 September 2021.

What Both Pathways Require:

  • Full-time work (30+ hours/week)
  • Valid work visa during the employment period
  • Meet English, health, and character requirements
  • Be aged 55 or under at the time of application
