Part time study
Studying Part-Time in New Zealand on a Visitor Visa
If you’re not a full-time student, you may still be able to study part-time in New Zealand on a visitor visa — as long as you meet certain conditions.
Who Can Study Part-Time?
You can apply to study part-time in New Zealand if:
- You are outside New Zealand and want to study part-time for up to 9 months, or
- You are already in New Zealand on a valid visa and want to add part-time study for the rest of your stay (maximum of 9 months total).
Rules for Studying Part-Time (Up to 9 Months)
To be allowed to study part-time:
- Your course must be certified to meet international student requirements.
- Your study must be part-time only and must last no more than 9 months.
- You must enrol in the course and pay the required fees.
- You must meet the visitor visa requirements, including having enough funds and a valid reason for staying.
If the main purpose of your visit is study, your application may be declined unless there are special circumstances.
Final Semester Full-Time Study Option
Even if you're technically a part-time student, you may still qualify as a full-time student (and be eligible for a student visa) if:
- You're in your final semester of a course that’s:
- At least 2 academic years long, OR
- Level 4 or higher on the NZ Qualifications Framework (NZQF)
You must not have used this option previously to qualify again under these rules.
Important Notes
- The maximum allowed study period under this pathway is 9 months.
- You must not extend your study beyond 9 months unless approved under special circumstances.
- If you're finishing your course, this is a great way to stay and complete your studies without switching to a full student visa—as long as it’s your final semester.
