Dependent children of work visa holders

Student Visas for Dependent Children of Work Visa Holders

If you hold a work visa in New Zealand and have children, they may be able to study in New Zealand on a student visa. However, eligibility depends on what type of work visa you hold. Here's a simplified guide to help you understand the rules:

Who Can Bring Their Children on a Student Visa?

Your dependent children may qualify for a student visa if you hold one of the following visas:

  • Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) (with some conditions)
  • Essential Skills Work Visa (with income conditions)
  • Religious Worker Visa (with income or sponsorship conditions)
  • Work-to-Residence Visa (if transitioning to residency)

Who Cannot Bring Their Children on a Student Visa?

Children of the following work visa holders are not eligible for student visas:

  • RSE (Recognised Seasonal Employer) workers
  • SSE (Supplementary Seasonal Employment) workers
  • Fishing crew visa holders
  • Working Holiday visa holders
  • Job Search visa holders under Skilled Migrant Category
  • Domestic staff of diplomats
  • Seasonal workers under Specific Purpose visas

Special Cases for AEWV Holders

Your children can get a student visa if you meet one of these:

  • Your job is ANZSCO skill level 1, 2, or 3
  • You’re earning 1.5x the median wage or more
  • Your job is on the Green List and meets all the requirements
  • You're working under approved Care or Transport sector work-to-residence policies

If you're working in a skill level 4 or 5 job, your child may only qualify if:

  • They already held a student visa on or before 26 June 2024, or
  • You meet one of the higher wage or sector exceptions listed above

Minimum Income Requirement

To bring your child on a student visa, you must earn at least $55,844 gross per year from your job.

  • This applies to AEWV, Essential Skills, and Religious Worker visa holders
  • If both parents hold qualifying visas, their incomes can be combined

Failing to meet or maintain this income can lead to deportation of both parent(s) and child.

Special Rule for Religious Workers

Children can apply for a student visa if:

  • Parents meet the income threshold OR
  • The sponsoring religious organisation agrees to support the child

No Enrolment Proof Needed

Good news: Dependent children don’t need to show proof of school enrolment to apply for a student visa.

Accommodation and financial support may also be covered by the parent’s existing work visa application.

Important Notes

  • Dependent children must meet standard health and character requirements
  • Student visas under these rules do not allow tertiary study
  • If your child becomes unlawful, this affects your immigration status too
